Kaitiakitanga - Caring for Our Place
Years 3-6 Unit | 4-5 Weeks
We are excited to begin our new unit about kaitiakitanga (guardianship/caring for our place). This unit will help your child learn about their connection to the environment and how to care for it.
What We'll Learn:
- Exploring and connecting to our local place
- Discovering living things (plants and animals) around us
- Understanding kaitiakitanga - how to be guardians
- Taking action to care for our environment
- Sharing our learning with others
How You Can Help:
- Talk about your place: Share stories about special places in your family
- Go exploring: Take walks together and notice living things
- Practice Te Reo: Learn nature words together (we'll send a word list!)
- Do caring actions: Pick up litter, water plants, feed birds together
- Share your culture: Tell us about caring practices from your culture
What We'll Need:
- Your child may bring home observation journals to complete
- We'll be doing outdoor activities - please ensure appropriate clothing
- If you have plant seeds or gardening supplies to share, that would be wonderful!
Important Dates:
- Week 4: Action Day - we'll be planting and caring (date: _________)
- Week 5: Sharing Celebration - you're invited! (date: _________)
