Kaitiakitanga - Caring for Our Place

Years 3-6 Unit | 4-5 Weeks

We are excited to begin our new unit about kaitiakitanga (guardianship/caring for our place). This unit will help your child learn about their connection to the environment and how to care for it.

What We'll Learn:

  • Exploring and connecting to our local place
  • Discovering living things (plants and animals) around us
  • Understanding kaitiakitanga - how to be guardians
  • Taking action to care for our environment
  • Sharing our learning with others

How You Can Help:

  • Talk about your place: Share stories about special places in your family
  • Go exploring: Take walks together and notice living things
  • Practice Te Reo: Learn nature words together (we'll send a word list!)
  • Do caring actions: Pick up litter, water plants, feed birds together
  • Share your culture: Tell us about caring practices from your culture

What We'll Need:

  • Your child may bring home observation journals to complete
  • We'll be doing outdoor activities - please ensure appropriate clothing
  • If you have plant seeds or gardening supplies to share, that would be wonderful!

Important Dates:

  • Week 4: Action Day - we'll be planting and caring (date: _________)
  • Week 5: Sharing Celebration - you're invited! (date: _________)
