The Digital Kaitiaki Challenge

The Mission Brief

Your mission is to work in a whānau group to design and prototype a digital taonga that helps a specific audience strengthen one of the four walls of their digital whare.

Assessment Rubric

Your project will be assessed on four key areas. Your final grade will be a holistic judgement based on these criteria.

Criteria Level 4: Excellent (Exceeds) Level 3: Proficient (Meets) Level 2: Developing (Approaching)
ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ Hauora-Centered Design (Health & Tech)
Problem Definition Clearly identifies a specific, nuanced well-being need for a chosen audience and explains its importance with depth and empathy. Clearly identifies a specific well-being need for a chosen audience. Identifies a general well-being need but it may be too broad or not well-defined for the audience.
Solution Effectiveness The taonga is a highly effective, creative, and practical tool that directly addresses the identified need in an empowering way. The taonga is a practical tool that effectively addresses the identified need. The taonga addresses the need, but its effectiveness could be improved or is not well-explained.
🧠 Systems Thinking (Social Sciences & Tech)
Understanding of Cause & Effect Demonstrates a deep understanding of the "ripple effect," explaining not just the problem but the underlying systems that cause it. Clearly explains the problem and the negative effects it has on well-being. Describes the problem but with limited explanation of its causes or wider effects.
Ethical Considerations Proactively identifies and discusses the ethical responsibilities of their project (e.g., data privacy, accessibility, potential for misuse). Shows good awareness of the key ethical responsibilities related to their project. Shows a basic awareness of ethical responsibilities, but may miss some key considerations.
šŸ¤ Whakawhanaungatanga (Collaboration)
Role Fulfillment & Contribution All members consistently exceeded their roles, actively supported others, and contributed high-quality work to the project. All members fulfilled their roles effectively and contributed fairly to the project. Most members fulfilled their roles, but contribution or collaboration may have been uneven.
Process & Problem-Solving The group worked cohesively, used their planning documents effectively, and navigated challenges constructively and respectfully. The group worked well together, followed their plan, and solved problems as they arose. The group worked together adequately, but may have struggled with planning or resolving disagreements.
šŸŽØ Cultural Storytelling (The Arts & English)
Clarity & Impact of Message The taonga communicates its core message with exceptional clarity, creativity, and emotional impact, perfectly tailored to its audience. The taonga communicates its core message clearly and effectively for its chosen audience. The taonga's message is understandable, but could be clearer or more engaging for the audience.
Integration of Te Ao Māori Authentically and powerfully integrates core concepts (e.g., mauri, mana, tikanga) as the central framework for the taonga's story and purpose. Clearly and respectfully integrates a core Māori concept to support the message of the taonga. Includes a Māori concept, but the connection to the project's purpose may be superficial or unclear.
