Kōrero Analysis Cards

For each scenario, discuss the analysis questions with your group.

Scenario 1

On a video of someone showing their new puppy:
Commenter A: "omg so cute!!!!"
Commenter B: "Actually, you shouldn't get that breed. They have lots of health problems."

Analysis Questions:

  • What is the intent of Commenter B?
  • What is the likely impact on the video creator's feelings?
  • How could Commenter B have shared their knowledge more constructively?
Scenario 2

On a group chat for a school project:
Student 1: "I've finished my part of the slideshow."
Student 2: "k."

Analysis Questions:

  • What is the emotional 'mana' of the reply "k."?
  • How might Student 1 feel after this reply?
  • What is a reply that would build mana instead?
Scenario 3

On a photo someone posts of a cake they baked:
Commenter: "Wow, that looks... interesting. My one turned out way better lol."

Analysis Questions:

  • Is this a compliment or an insult? (Or both?)
  • What does the "lol" do to the meaning of the comment?
  • What is a more mana-enhancing way to share your own success?
Scenario 4

In a YouTube comment section under a science video:
Commenter: "You're completely wrong about the physics here. You clearly didn't do any research. Go back to school."

Analysis Questions:

  • Is it okay to disagree with people online?
  • What is the difference between disagreeing with an idea and attacking a person?
  • How could this comment be rewritten to be a respectful debate?
Scenario 5

Someone posts a drawing they are proud of.
Commenter: "Is this AI?"

Analysis Questions:

  • What might this question imply to an artist?
  • What is the potential impact on the artist's Taha Hinengaro?
  • How could you ask about their creative process in a more positive way?
Scenario 6

In a private chat, a friend shares some exciting news.
You: (You see the message, but you're busy and forget to reply for a few hours).

Analysis Questions:

  • Can silence also be a form of kōrero?
  • What might your friend feel during those few hours?
  • What is a quick, simple reply that can protect your friend's feelings even if you're busy?
