Literacy Fundamentals: Structured Literacy & Phonics Foundations

Evidence-based systematic phonics instruction using 'The Code' methodology for Years 0–3 learners building foundational literacy skills

Lesson 9: Complex Patterns 1 - Diphthongs & Alternative Spellings

🎯 Learning Objectives

  • Students understand that some vowel sounds are made by two vowels gliding together (diphthongs)
  • Students can identify and read words with oi/oy and ou/ow patterns
  • Students recognize alternative spellings for the same sound
  • Students apply knowledge of complex patterns to decode unfamiliar words
  • Students understand that English has multiple ways to spell the same sound

Success Criteria (ākonga-facing)

  • I can read words with oi/oy and ou/ow patterns.
  • I can spot alternative spellings for the same sound.
  • I can use these patterns to decode new words.

Kupu / Vocabulary

  • diphthong – two vowel sounds gliding together
  • alternative spelling – different way to spell a sound
  • vowel sound – sound made by a vowel
  • pattern – repeated spelling rule
  • glide – move from one sound to another
  • decode – sound out and read

πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

Teacher Materials:

  • 'The Code' diphthong cards (oi, oy, ou, ow)
  • Sound comparison charts
  • Picture cards for diphthong words
  • Whiteboard and colored markers
  • Alternative spelling reference sheets

Student Materials:

  • Individual diphthong cards
  • Word sorting mats
  • Spelling choice worksheets
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Small whiteboards and markers

1. Warm-Up: Vowel Sound Journey (6 mins)

Purpose: Introduce the concept of vowel sounds that move and change.

Teacher Script: "We've learned about vowel sounds that stay in one place. Today we'll discover vowel sounds that take a journey - they start in one place and glide to another!"

Sound Journey Demonstration:

  • Listen: Say "boy" slowly - notice how the sound moves from /o/ to /i/
  • Listen: Say "cow" slowly - notice how it moves from /a/ to /oo/
  • Movement: Use hand gestures to show the gliding motion
  • Discovery: "These are called diphthongs - sounds that glide!"
Engagement Tip: Have students feel their mouths moving as they say the sounds slowly.

2. Teaching oi/oy Diphthong (10 mins)

Systematic Introduction: Teach the /oi/ sound with its two common spellings.

oi spelling:
  • Sound: /oi/ (like in "oil")
  • Position: Usually in the middle of words
  • Words: oil, coin, point, join
  • Memory: "oi in the middle"
oy spelling:
  • Sound: /oi/ (like in "boy")
  • Position: Usually at the end of words
  • Words: boy, toy, joy, enjoy
  • Memory: "oy at the end"

Teaching Process:

  1. Teach the /oi/ sound first (without spelling)
  2. Show that this sound has two different spellings
  3. Teach the position pattern (oi middle, oy end)
  4. Practice with examples and exceptions
  5. Apply to reading and spelling new words

3. Teaching ou/ow Diphthong (12 mins)

Second Diphthong: Introduce the /ou/ sound with its spelling variations.

ou spelling:
  • Sound: /ou/ (like in "out")
  • Position: Usually in the middle of words
  • Words: out, house, about, count
  • Memory: "ou in the middle"
ow spelling:
  • Sound: /ou/ (like in "cow")
  • Position: Usually at the end of words
  • Words: cow, how, now, brown
  • Memory: "ow at the end"

Important Note About 'ow':

Challenge: 'ow' can make two different sounds!

  • /ou/ sound: cow, how, now (diphthong)
  • /ō/ sound: snow, grow, show (long o)
  • Strategy: Try both sounds to see which makes sense

4. Spelling Choice Practice (12 mins)

Decision Making: Students practice choosing the correct spelling for diphthong sounds.

Spelling Choice Activities:

oi or oy?
  • b___ (boy/boi) β†’ boy
  • c___n (coin/coyn) β†’ coin
  • t___ (toy/toi) β†’ toy
  • p___nt (point/poynt) β†’ point
ou or ow?
  • c___ (cow/cou) β†’ cow
  • h___se (house/howse) β†’ house
  • n___ (now/nou) β†’ now
  • ab___t (about/abowt) β†’ about
Teaching Strategy: Use the position rules as the primary guide, but acknowledge that there are exceptions that must be memorized.

5. Independent Practice & Exit Ticket (5 mins)

Exit Ticket Task

"Read these words: 'enjoy', 'sound', 'brown'. Then write the correct spelling for these sounds: /oi/ at the end of a word, /ou/ in the middle of a word."

Success Criteria:

  • Emerging: Reads most diphthong words correctly, identifies some spelling patterns
  • Developing: Reads all words correctly and applies position rules accurately
  • Secure: Demonstrates confident understanding of diphthongs and spelling choices
Celebration: "You've mastered moving vowel sounds! Tomorrow we'll explore even more complex patterns and tricky spellings."

πŸ“Š Assessment & Differentiation

Formative Assessment:

  • Observe diphthong sound production
  • Check spelling pattern recognition
  • Monitor position rule application
  • Assess decoding of new diphthong words

Support Strategies:

  • Struggling: Focus on one diphthong at a time, use gesture cues
  • Confident: Introduce au/aw patterns, explore exceptions
  • ELL Support: Compare to diphthong sounds in home language
