Lesson 3: CVC Word Building - Mastering Three-Sound Words
π― Learning Objectives
- Students systematically build and read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words
- Students understand word manipulation (changing one sound changes the word)
- Students apply sound buttons confidently to decode unfamiliar words
- Students recognize common CVC word patterns
- Students build automatic sound-symbol recognition
π¦ Materials Needed
Teacher Materials:
- Full 'Code' card set (s, a, t, p, m, d, g, o)
- Large magnetic letters
- Word building mat (demo size)
- CVC word list (organized by pattern)
- Timer for fluency practice
Student Materials:
- Individual letter tiles (3 sets per student)
- Word building mats
- CVC word practice sheets
- Small whiteboards
- Sound button stickers
1. Sound Speed Drill (5 mins)
Purpose: Build automaticity in sound-symbol recognition for fluent reading.
Activity: "Let's warm up our brains with some speed practice! When I show a letter, say the sound as quickly as you can."
Drill Sequence:
- Round 1: Show letters in order: s-a-t-p-m-d-g-o
- Round 2: Random order, building speed
- Round 3: Student challenge - can they beat their time?
Success Criteria: All students should be responding within 2 seconds per sound. Note any students needing extra practice.
2. Systematic CVC Word Building (15 mins)
Teacher Introduction: "Today we're going to become word builders! We'll learn how changing just one sound can make a completely different word."
Word Family Progression:
- -at family: sat β mat β pat β gat
- -og family: dog β gog β mog β tog
- -ap family: map β sap β tap β gap
- Mixed practice: All patterns combined
Teaching Process:
- Start with 'sat'
- Change 's' to 'm' β 'mat'
- Students predict the new word
- Build and read together
- Continue pattern
Key Teaching Point: "Notice how changing just one letter changes the whole word! This is why every sound matters when we read and spell."
3. Independent Word Building Practice (15 mins)
Setup: Students work in pairs with letter tiles and word building mats.
Station Activities:
- Station 1: Word family races (-at, -og, -ap words)
- Station 2: Mystery word building (teacher calls out word, students build)
- Station 3: Word fixing (broken words to repair)
- Station 4: Speed building challenge
Partner Protocol:
- Partner A builds the word
- Partner B checks with sound buttons
- Both partners read the word aloud
- Switch roles for next word
- Help each other when stuck
Teacher Role: Circulate to observe, provide feedback, and note students needing additional support.
4. CVC Reading Fluency (8 mins)
Objective: Practice reading CVC words quickly and accurately without sounding out every letter.
Fluency Word Lists:
- Level 1: sat, mat, pat, tap, map, gap
- Level 2: dog, got, pot, top, mop, sop
- Level 3: Mixed: sat, dog, tap, got, map, pot
Fluency Strategy:
- Look at the whole word
- Try to read it smoothly first
- If stuck, use sound buttons
- Go back and read smoothly
Progress Tracking: Students count how many words they can read correctly in 1 minute. Record baseline for future comparison.
5. Word Building Challenge & Exit Ticket (2 mins)
Exit Challenge
"Build these words with your letter tiles: 'got', 'mat', 'sap'. Use sound buttons to check your work."
Assessment Rubric:
- Emerging: Builds 1-2 words correctly with help
- Developing: Builds all words correctly, may need sound button reminder
- Secure: Builds all words accurately and uses sound buttons independently
Celebration: "You're becoming excellent word builders! Tomorrow we'll practice blending sounds even more smoothly."
π Assessment & Differentiation
Observation Focus:
- Speed of sound recognition
- Accuracy in word building
- Understanding of letter-sound changes
- Use of sound button strategy
- Reading fluency improvement
Differentiation Strategies:
- Struggling: Limit to 2-3 word families
- Confident: Add 4-letter words (maps, dogs)
- Advanced: Create their own word families
- ELL Support: Picture cards for word meanings
Next Lesson Focus: Building fluency in blending and segmenting sounds, with emphasis on smooth, connected reading.
