Scientific Method & Traditional Practices
Parallel knowledge systems and empirical observation
Two Ways of Knowing
Traditional MÄori knowledge (mÄtauranga MÄori) and Western scientific methods both involve careful observation and systematic understanding. This lesson explores how they complement each other.
Examples of MÄori Science
- Navigation: Star patterns, ocean currents, bird migrations
- Horticulture: Maramataka (lunar calendar) for planting
- Medicine: RongoÄ MÄori (traditional remedies)
- Conservation: RÄhui (temporary prohibitions) for sustainability
