Unit 8: Hauora Wairua - Holistic Wellbeing

Exploring Te Whare Tapa Whā framework for balanced physical, mental, social, and spiritual health

Carry this card or screenshot for quick koru breathing practice.

Koru Breath Guide

  1. Place your finger at the base of the koru (start of the spiral).
  2. Inhale slowly through your nose as you trace the koru outward.
  3. Pause briefly at the edge — notice your body softening.
  4. Exhale gently through your mouth as you trace back to the centre.
  5. Repeat 4-6 times. Whakarongo ki tō manawa – listen to your heartbeat.

Tips

  • Use a real koru pattern, finger paint, or visualise one in your mind.
  • Add a quiet kupu (e.g., "rangimārie", "haumaru") on every exhale.
  • Share with whānau – breathing together builds collective calm.
