Te Reo Māori Phonics Guide
Ngā Oro o Te Reo • The Sounds of Te Reo Māori
🎯 Why This Matters
Correct pronunciation is a sign of respect for te reo Māori. Te reo has consistent spelling and pronunciation — once you learn the sounds, you can read any word!
Good news: Te reo Māori has only 15 sounds (compared to English's 44+). Every letter always makes the same sound.
🔤 Ngā Oropuare — The 5 Vowels
Te reo Māori has 5 vowels. Each vowel has a short and long version. The long vowel (with macron) is held for about twice as long.
"ah"
like "car"
"eh"
like "bed"
"ee"
like "bee"
"or"
like "for"
"oo"
like "zoo"
💡 The Macron Matters!
A macron (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū) means hold the vowel longer. This can change meaning:
- ata (morning) vs āta (carefully)
- keke (cake) vs kēkē (armpit)
