πŸ§ŠπŸ’§πŸ’¨ States of Matter

Ngā Δ€huatanga o te MatΕ« β€” Solids, Liquids, Gases

πŸ”¬ Everything is Made of Matter

Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything around you β€” air, water, rocks, your body β€” is made of matter. Matter exists in different states: solid, liquid, and gas. The state depends on how particles are arranged and moving.

πŸ“Š The Three States

🧊

Solid

Fixed shape and volume

Particles: Tightly packed, vibrate in place, strong bonds

Examples: ice, rock, wood, metal

πŸ’§

Liquid

Fixed volume, takes shape of container

Particles: Close together but slide past each other

Examples: water, milk, oil, blood

πŸ’¨

Gas

No fixed shape or volume, fills container

Particles: Far apart, moving fast and freely

Examples: air, steam, oxygen, carbon dioxide

πŸ”„ Changing State

Adding or Removing Heat

When we add heat, particles move faster and can change state. When we remove heat, particles slow down.

πŸ’¨ Gas

Key Terms

  • Melting β€” solid β†’ liquid (ice β†’ water)
  • Freezing β€” liquid β†’ solid (water β†’ ice)
  • Evaporation β€” liquid β†’ gas (water β†’ steam)
  • Condensation β€” gas β†’ liquid (steam β†’ water)
  • Sublimation β€” solid β†’ gas directly (dry ice)

🌍 In the Real World

Water is Special

Water (Hβ‚‚O) is the only substance we commonly see in all three states:

  • 🧊 Ice (solid) β€” glaciers, ice cubes
  • πŸ’§ Water (liquid) β€” rivers, oceans, rain
  • ☁️ Water vapour (gas) β€” clouds, steam, humidity

The water cycle depends on matter changing state!

✏️ Activities

Activity: State Sorting

Classify these into solid, liquid, or gas:

  • Honey: ________
  • Oxygen: ________
  • Glass: ________
  • Orange juice: ________
  • Helium: ________
Activity: Particle Diagrams

Draw how particles are arranged in each state:

Draw particles in: Solid | Liquid | Gas
