Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything around you β air, water, rocks, your body β is made of matter. Matter exists in different states: solid, liquid, and gas. The state depends on how particles are arranged and moving.
Fixed shape and volume
Examples: ice, rock, wood, metal
Fixed volume, takes shape of container
Examples: water, milk, oil, blood
No fixed shape or volume, fills container
Examples: air, steam, oxygen, carbon dioxide
When we add heat, particles move faster and can change state. When we remove heat, particles slow down.
