Respect means treating people, places, and things with care and consideration. In Te Ao Māori, this connects to mana — the inherent dignity and worth of every person. When we show respect, we honour others' mana.

  • Manaakitanga — hospitality, kindness, caring for others
  • Whakaute — respect, especially to elders
  • Rangatiratanga — self-determination, leadership
  • Kaitiakitanga — guardianship of the environment
  • Kotahitanga — unity, working together

Respectful Actions
  • 👂 Listen when others speak
  • 🗣️ Use kind words and a calm voice
  • 🤝 Follow rules at school and home
  • 🙏 Say please and thank you
  • 💬 Accept differences in others
  • 🚫 Don't bully or put others down
  • ♻️ Care for belongings and places

⚠️ What's NOT Respect?

Recognise Disrespect
  • ❌ Interrupting when someone is talking
  • ❌ Making fun of others' differences
  • ❌ Damaging property or the environment
  • ❌ Ignoring rules without good reason
  • ❌ Using hurtful language
