A map is a representation of a place, showing features like roads, mountains, rivers, and buildings. Maps help us navigate, understand geography, and plan journeys!

Shows countries, cities, borders

Shows landforms, rivers, mountains

πŸ”§ Map Features (BOLTS)

Every Map Should Have
  • Border β€” frame around the map
  • Orientation β€” compass showing north
  • Legend/Key β€” explains symbols
  • Title β€” what the map shows
  • Scale β€” shows distance (1cm = 1km)

🧭 Compass Directions

The Four Main Directions

N (North) ⬆️
⬅️ W (West)     E (East) ➑️
S (South) ⬇️

Trick: Never Eat Soggy Weetbix (clockwise from N)

In-between Directions
  • NE β€” Northeast
  • SE β€” Southeast
  • SW β€” Southwest
  • NW β€” Northwest

Finding Locations

Maps often have a grid of letters and numbers. To find a location:

  1. Find the letter/number on the bottom (horizontal)
  2. Find the letter/number on the side (vertical)
  3. Where they meet = the location!

Example: B3 = column B, row 3
