🫀 Human Body Systems

Ngā Pūnaha o te Tinana — How Our Bodies Work

🏃 The Amazing Human Body

Your body is made up of many systems that work together to keep you alive. Each system has specific organs that perform important jobs. Like parts of a machine, they must all work together!

🔬 Major Body Systems

🫀

Circulatory System

Transports blood, oxygen, and nutrients around the body.

Organs: Heart, blood vessels, blood

Māori: Te pūnaha toto

🫁

Respiratory System

Brings oxygen in and removes carbon dioxide.

Organs: Lungs, trachea, diaphragm

Māori: Te pūnaha whakahā

🦴

Skeletal System

Supports body structure and protects organs.

Organs: 206 bones, cartilage

Māori: Te pūnaha kōiwi

💪

Muscular System

Enables movement and maintains posture.

Organs: 600+ muscles

Māori: Te pūnaha uaua

🧠

Nervous System

Controls body, processes information, senses.

Organs: Brain, spinal cord, nerves

Māori: Te pūnaha io

🍽️

Digestive System

Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients.

Organs: Stomach, intestines, liver

Māori: Te pūnaha whakawhana kai

🔗 Working Together

Example: Running

When you run, many systems work together:

  • 🧠 Nervous — brain sends signals to muscles
  • 💪 Muscular — muscles contract to move legs
  • 🦴 Skeletal — bones provide structure
  • 🫁 Respiratory — breathing faster for oxygen
  • 🫀 Circulatory — heart pumps faster to deliver oxygen

✏️ Activities

Activity: Heart Rate Experiment

  1. Find your pulse (wrist or neck)
  2. Count beats for 15 seconds at rest, multiply by 4 = ____ bpm
  3. Do 20 star jumps
  4. Immediately count again = ____ bpm
  5. Why did your heart rate increase?
