🧩 Breaking Things Into Parts

A fraction represents part of a whole. When you cut a pizza into 4 equal pieces and eat 1, you've eaten 1/4 (one quarter) of the pizza!

Two Numbers

  • Numerator (top) — how many parts you HAVE
  • Denominator (bottom) — how many EQUAL parts the whole is divided into

3/4 means 3 parts out of 4 equal parts

🔢 Common Fractions

1/2

One half

1/4

⚖️ Equivalent Fractions

Same Value, Different Look

Some fractions look different but represent the same amount:

  • 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 = 50/100
  • 1/4 = 2/8 = 25/100

Tip: Multiply or divide both top AND bottom by the same number!

📏 Comparing Fractions

Which is Bigger?

Same denominator: compare numerators (3/8 < 5/8)

Same numerator: smaller denominator = bigger fraction (1/4 > 1/8)
