🌾 Food Systems & Sustainability

Te PΕ«naha Kai β€” From Farm to Plate

🍽️ More Than Just Food

A food system is everything involved in getting food from where it's grown to your plate β€” and what happens after. It includes farming, processing, transport, shopping, cooking, eating, and waste. Every choice in the chain affects people and planet.

⚠️ Food System Challenges

🌍 Food Miles

Food travels thousands of kilometers, creating emissions. An apple from overseas uses more energy than a local one.

πŸ—‘οΈ Food Waste

NZ throws away ~157,000 tonnes of food per year. That's money and resources wasted.

πŸ’§ Water Use

Agriculture uses huge amounts of water. Irrigation can deplete rivers and aquifers.

🌑️ Climate Impact

Food production creates ~1/3 of global greenhouse gas emissions.

🌿 Māhinga Kai β€” Traditional Food

Sustainable Practices

Traditional Māori food gathering was inherently more sustainable:

  • 🌿 Local β€” food sourced from nearby
  • πŸ“… Seasonal β€” eating what's in season
  • βš–οΈ Take only what needed β€” no waste
  • πŸ”„ Rāhui β€” letting resources recover
  • 🌍 Kaitiakitanga β€” caring for food sources

πŸ’‘ Building Better Systems

What Can We Do?

  • 🏠 Grow your own β€” even a small garden helps
  • πŸ›’ Buy local β€” support farmers' markets
  • πŸ₯• Eat seasonal β€” less transport, better taste
  • πŸ– Reduce meat β€” one of the biggest impacts
  • πŸ“¦ Reduce packaging β€” bring your own bags
  • 🍌 Reduce waste β€” plan meals, use leftovers
  • ♻️ Compost β€” return nutrients to soil

✏️ Activities

Activity: Food Journey

Choose an item from your lunch and investigate:

  1. Where was it grown/produced?
  2. How far did it travel to reach you?
  3. What packaging does it have?
  4. Is there a more sustainable alternative?
